Cloud 9 is the wave that made Siargao Island famous. Located in the town of General Luna on the island's east coast, it is a powerful, hollow right-hand reef break that has drawn professional and amateur surfers from around the world for decades. It is the reason Siargao is widely known as the surfing capital of the Philippines.
What makes Cloud 9 different
Unlike a typical sandy-bottom beach break, Cloud 9 breaks over a shallow coral reef, which gives the wave its shape and power but also makes it unforgiving for beginners. The wave is best known for its barreling sections, and it has hosted international surfing competitions over the years, drawing both professional athletes and a steady stream of traveling surfers who plan entire trips around swell forecasts.
A wooden boardwalk extends out over the water to a viewing platform at the heart of the break, and it has become as much a landmark as the wave itself. Even visitors who do not surf make a point of walking out to the platform, especially in the late afternoon when surfers are out and the light turns golden over the water.
Surfing Cloud 9 — who it is for
Cloud 9 is generally considered a wave for intermediate to advanced surfers because of the reef beneath it and the power of the break. If you are a beginner, local instructors typically recommend starting at gentler nearby breaks such as Jacking Horse or Quicksilver, where the seabed is more forgiving, before working up to Cloud 9 itself. Board rental shops and surf schools are clustered around the boardwalk area and can help match visitors to the right spot for their level.
If you are not surfing
You do not need to surf to enjoy Cloud 9. The area around the boardwalk has grown into one of Siargao's liveliest strips, with cafes, restaurants, and places to sit and watch the sunset over the water. Many visitors treat a sunset session at Cloud 9 as a standard part of any Siargao itinerary, surfers or not.
Getting there
Cloud 9 is in General Luna, which is the main tourist hub of Siargao Island and where most accommodation is concentrated. If you are arriving from the mainland, the usual route is a ferry from Surigao City to Dapa Port, followed by a short tricycle or habal-habal ride to General Luna. You can book your Surigao to Siargao ferry ticket online in advance to avoid queuing at the port, especially during peak season or around surf competitions when demand for both ferry seats and accommodation in General Luna rises.
Best time to visit
Swell conditions at Cloud 9 vary with the season, and the more consistent, larger swells are generally associated with the amihan (northeast monsoon) season roughly from August through November, while calmer, smaller conditions are more common outside that window. If wave size matters to your trip, it is worth checking recent surf reports before you travel rather than relying on a fixed calendar, since conditions shift year to year.
