Travel between islands in the Philippines almost always runs through a port, and for first-time visitors unfamiliar with how that system works, it can be one of the more confusing parts of planning a trip to Siargao. Here is the short version of how it fits together.
Two ports, one route
For travelers heading to Siargao Island from the mainland, the relevant route runs between Surigao City port, on the Mindanao mainland, and Dapa Port, Siargao's main pier and point of entry. Ferries and passenger vessels operate between the two, and this is the standard way to reach the island for anyone not flying directly into Sayak Airport.
What a "port" actually means for your trip
In practice, a port in this context is a passenger terminal — a place to check in, wait, and board a vessel, similar in concept to an airport terminal but for sea travel. Surigao City port and Dapa Port both function this way: you arrive ahead of your scheduled departure, check in with your ticket (paper or e-ticket), and board when your vessel is called.
Booking around the port system
Because ferry travel in the Philippines runs on a fixed schedule with limited seats per sailing, it is generally more reliable to book your ticket in advance rather than arriving at the port and buying a walk-in ticket, especially during busy travel periods. You can check the ferry schedule and book your Surigao to Siargao ferry ticket online ahead of time, which also means you skip the walk-in queue at the port itself.
If you are driving to the mainland port
If you are arriving at Surigao City port by car and do not intend to bring the vehicle across to Siargao, paid parking is available nearby — see our guide to parking near Surigao City port for how that works.
On arrival at Dapa Port
Once you arrive at Dapa Port on Siargao, onward transport — tricycle, habal-habal, or a pre-arranged pickup — is readily available to take you to General Luna or wherever you are staying. The port itself is a transit point rather than a destination, so most travelers move on from Dapa fairly quickly after arrival.
